Press statement issued by the Coordinating Committees of the Iraqi Democratic Movement Abroad
No to the Suppression of Civil Freedoms in Iraq
In our wounded country, civic activists including young people and
students, along with a broad spectrum of the Iraqi people, have been
coming out in peaceful demonstrations and a popular protest movement,
protected by the constitution and the law, to demand change and reform,
to get rid of the system based on sectarian quotas, eliminate corruption, achieve social justice and defeat terrorism.
But rogue militias and their supporters among ruling political parties
perceive this popular protest movement as a threat to their interests
that are associated with corruption and the system based on sectarian
quota. They have resorted to old methods of intimidating the people to
prevent them from raising their voices against injustice and corruption.
What happened on 8th May 2017 was indeed a return to the practices of
Saddam’s dictatorial regime in suppressing the honest voices.
In the
early hours of Monday 8th May, three vehicles carrying an outlaw armed
group passed through all the checkpoints, without number plates, towards
the Battawiyeen area in central Baghdad, which is protected by the
security forces. This armed group kidnapped seven young students and
civil activists including a journalist, who have been active in peaceful
protests and in the defence of the rights of students on university
campus, in order to silence and intimidate them. The abductees are:
- Abdullah Latif Faraj (correspondent of the newspaper “Tareeq Al-Shaab”)
- Ahmed Na’eem Ruwai’i
- Heydar Nashi Hassan
- Ali Hussein Shnawa
- Samer Amer Mousa
- Zaid Yehya
- Hamza Younis
The kidnappings, assassinations and intimidation by unknown gunmen
backed by influential parties, harm the prestige of the Iraqi state and
its government and undermine the credibility of this government in
protecting the homeland.
We, in the Coordinating Committees of the Iraqi Democratic Movement
Abroad, call for the immediate release of the kidnapped, and hold the
Iraqi government headed by the Prime Minister responsible for their
safety and return to their families. We demand that they ensure that
weapons are only held by the state, and those who violate the law are
brought to account.
We also call upon the international community to
put pressure on the Iraqi government and its parties to guarantee human
rights of expression, thought and opinion for all Iraqis.
No to terrorism.. No to crimes.. Yes to the freedom of thought and opinion
